Peter Matz, an award-winning conductor, composer and arranger – it was hearing his early work on the Barbra Streisand albums where I became a big fan. My dream was to record with him one day and the chance presented itself when we decided to make this album of some of the classic musical theatre songs. I wanted the album to sound full and lush, and I knew Peter’s orchestrations and arrangements would do just that. The New World Philharmonic brought them to life. We must have auditioned over one hundred songs before settling on the 13 here. Two special to me are “September Song” which is my homage to Lotte Lenya and “I Gaze In Your Eyes” which is very special because Ann Hampton Calloway was allowed, by Cole Porter’s estate, to write lyrics to a song Cole Porter had written the music for but had never added lyrics. Recorded at CTS studios in London. It remains one of my favourite recordings and the cover too! EP with long hair and on the CD’s booklet back cover – memories of Lauren Bacall.
