On Thursday 5th October Elaine took 14 underprivileged children from Mumbai to see ‘The Lion King’ at London’s Lyceum Theatre accompanied by OSCAR Foundation (The Organization for Social Change, Awareness and Responsibility.)
On a plane back from India in December 2015, Lucinda Sowerbutts, decided to organise a football, education and culture tour to the UK for 14 underprivileged children from the Mumbai slums.
Lucinda met the British High Commissioner in Mumbai to discuss the idea who was very supportive and confident that it would benefit not just the selected children, but also the community as a whole. He and Lucinda oversaw the complexities of getting ‘high risk’ children UK visas and the hard work that followed paid off. The children will arrive in the UK on Saturday 30th September accompanied by OSCAR (Organization for Social Change, Awareness and Responsibility) founder, Ashok Rathod and 20 year old trainer, Maruti Chauhan. A volunteer has spent three months in Mumbai teaching the children English and preparing them for their trip.
On Thursday 5th October, as part of their visit to the UK, Elaine arranged for the 14 children to visit London’s Lyceum Theatre to watch a performance of Disney’s musical spectacular The Lion King. It was the first time these children had been to a theatre. All of them had a great time and were treated by Elaine & Disney to ice cream and Lion King memorabilia to take home!
During their visit they will be playing football at various schools, Beaudesert Park, Aldro, Hall Grove, OBH, Cheltenham College and The Cheltenham Ladies’ College, who have been raising money through various events and each school will also host the visitors for 2 nights.
